Nora Ephron's autobiographical novel records her marriage breakdown with investigative journalist Carl Bernstein ("The President's Men"). The novel is adapted into a big screen by director Mike Nichols and solidly portrayed by Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson. Rachel Samstadt (played by Streep) is Efron's substitute, a New York food writer who, despite initial doubts, fell in love with and married Washington political columnist Mark Forman (played by Nicholson). Not long after, the second pregnancy, separation, and Mark's feminist return brought pressure to the marriage, leading to a painful divorce and sparking Rachel's cynical thinking about the essence of love, sex, and relationships.
